Abbotsley Golf Hotel is the teaching base of Christine Langford, a former Ladies European Tour (LET) player and now a highly reputable coach. The delightful golf courses at Abbotsley were both designed by Vivien Saunders, OBE a former British Women’s Open Champion and proprietor of Abbotsley. Together with Hotel Manager, Helen Lavis (6 handicap), Viv and Chris ensure that women golfers are exceptionally well catered for. Abbotsley is situated near the historic town of St Neots, just minutes from the A1 and within 20 minutes of Cambridge.
According to Women's Sport and Fitness Foundation, Golf Factsheet March 2011, 'Golf is the 11th most popular activity for women' and 'female golfers rank fourth out of 42 sports for overall satisfaction with their golf experience. Women are equally satisfied in golf as they are in sport overall. The average length a woman participates in golf is 10 years. Almost 80% of women have regularly participated in golf or increased it in the last 12 months. And a massive 92% of women are looking to continue participating at the same rate or are even considering increasing it. Over the past 12 months, the figures show that women are less satisfied overall with their golfing experience but they are still slightly happier than male golfers.
I cringe when a couple of, very clever, TV adverts are aired that show you how the media see golfers. Quiet males of retirement age, that are overweight and wear dated, brightly coloured clothing and are being bullied by the stereotypical golf widow.
Let me paint you a picture of how I see a new wave of golfers. Open-minded females, concerned with their fitness, healthy eating and fashion. Juggling life with a career they maybe single or married, or stay at home to look after their family. Enjoyment is gained from playing golf and social activities off the course.
